Another Chemical Engineering Technology alumnus, Servaas Lips, started his PhD carreer this month. Servaas obtained a research grant from the Special Research Fund (BOF) of Ghent University for his project ‘First-principles supported operando catalyst characterization for deep catalysis understanding’. In the project, he aims to integrate findings from first-principle calculations with operando spectroscopy to explore potential synergies. Once a methodology is established, it will be applied to three important reactions in the field of green chemistry: CO2 methanation, alcohol dehydration, and hydrodeoxygenation of anisole. This research will complement the ongoing efforts of Arno and Tom, who are respectively focusing on alcohol dehydration and hydrodeoxygenation of anisole.
